Are you a qualified Certificate IV Veterinary Nurse looking to advance your knowledge and skills in veterinary nursing and leadership? Do you have a passion to learn and introduce advanced patient nursing skills and care within the workplace? The Diploma of Veterinary Nursing (General Practice) is a professional and technical program for qualified nurses wishing to advance both their nursing and leadership skills. Unlike the Emergency and Critical Care and Surgical Diplomas you do not have to be working in an emergency or specialist facility. The course is specifically for veterinary nurses working in general practice.

Course Delivery Information

ACM50512 Diploma of Veterinary Nursing (General Practice) is a nationally recognised course conducted as part-time correspondence based study. You will be given a study timetable upon enrolment which outlines your units of study, due dates and specific requirements for assessment.

Upon successful completion of all course requirements, you will be awarded a Certificate of Completion and an Academic Transcript which documents your individual outcomes.

Student Support Coordinators are available for one on one student support and will assist you with anything you may need. Learn more about the AIRC team.

Who is this suitable for?

If you have a passion for ultimate patient care and advancing education and training within the workplace then this is the course for you. ACM50512 Diploma of Veterinary Nursing (General Practice) requires that you have access and regular exposure to patients, clients, consults, medical and surgical cases, veterinary staff, nursing, reception and administrative duties, practice policies, procedures, retail and customer service experience.

Entry Requirements

The pre-requisites for this course include:

  • Current Certificate IV in Veterinary Nursing
  • Have worked at least 4-5 years in the veterinary industry
  • Minimum 25 hours paid work per week in a veterinary clinic/hospital
  • Reliable internet access and an email address

This course allows enrolments once a month. There are no intakes in December.


General Practice Diploma Veterinary Nursing

Units of Study

A total of 8 units must be completed. You must have already completed the 19 core units from ACM40412 Certificate IV in Veterinary Nursing.

ACMSUS301A Implement and monitor environmentally sustainable work practices

  • Covers the process required to analyse the workplace in an effective manner in relation to environmentally sustainable work practices and to implement improvements and monitor their effectiveness.

ACMVET509A Manage Veterinary Nursing Procedures

  • Covers the skills and knowledge necessary to manage nursing procedures in general veterinary practice. Nursing procedures range from veterinary support in consults and surgery to the daily care of hospitalised patients. Nursing support includes the preparation of equipment, materials, medications and the patient; monitoring anaesthesia, providing assistance in theatre, administering drugs, providing wound care, drain maintenance, critical care and infection control.

ACMVET510A: Apply Veterinary Nursing Pathophysiology

  • Covers the skills and knowledge necessary to apply veterinary pathophysiology in general veterinary practice. Pathophysiology involves the recognition of abnormal function caused by disease. Application of this knowledge supports veterinary diagnosis and treatment. This Unit covers the fundamentals of disease and common disease processes. It includes diagnostic tests, treatment options and nursing care. A practical understanding of veterinary pathophysiology enables nurses to better support veterinary recommendations, encourage owner compliance, and improve patient outcomes.

ACMVET511A: Apply Principles of Animal Behaviour

  • Covers the skills and knowledge necessary to assess and respond to animal behaviour in general veterinary practice. The Unit covers the fundamentals of behavioural medicine, which includes the promotion of behavioural health and appropriate intervention strategies for behaviour problems. It requires a holistic application of veterinary nursing, distinguishing normal and abnormal behaviours, acceptable and unacceptable behaviours, current behavioural therapies, animal legislation and effective client communication.

ACMWHS501A Manage workplace health and safety processes

  • Covers the process required by an individual responsible for ongoing management of workplace health and safety within an area of management responsibility, where the workplace health and safety management processes have been set up by other persons, either internal or external to the organisation.

BSBCUS501C Manage quality customer service

  • Covers the skills and knowledge required to develop strategies to manage organisational systems that ensure products and services are delivered and maintained to standards agreed by the organisation.

BSBWOR502B Ensure team effectiveness

  • Covers the skills and knowledge required to facilitate all aspects of teamwork within the organisation. It involves taking a leadership role in the development of team plans, leading and facilitating teamwork and actively engaging with the management of the organisation.

TAEDEL402A Facilitate group-based learning

  • Covers the skills and knowledge required to facilitate learning by individuals within a group.

 

* To begin the above units you must have already completed the 19 core units from ACM40412 Certificate IV in Veterinary Nursing. If you do not already have all of these units we can arrange to deliver or assess you in them.
